چکیده
Fig. 1A. Complete ptosis of the right eye at presentation. Dear Editor, Cysticercosis cellulosae, the larval form of the pork tapeworm Taenia solium, causes cysticercosis, in which humans serve as the intermediate hosts in the parasite life cycle. Cysticercosis is endemic in developing regions such as South America, India and China.1,2 However, a rise in a cysticercosis has been observed in industrialised regions, owing to changing migration and travel patterns in recent years.3 Ophthalmic cysticercosis involving the vitreous, subretinal, subconjunctival and orbit have been reported previously. In this report, we describe a patient with myocysticercosis of the levator palpebrae superioris (LPS), a rare clinical entity with only 5 other cases in the literature.4,5 Case Report A 23-year-old Indian man presented with 2 weeks of right eye ptosis noticed incidentally on awakening. There was mild upper eyelid discomfort but no diplopia or decreased vision. His ophthalmic and medical histories were unremarkable. The patient was a construction worker and had previously lived in India. His visual acuity was 20/30 and 20/20 in the right and left eyes respectively. Both pupils were symmetric and reactive to light with no relative afferent pupillary defect; colour vision was normal. There was complete ptosis of the right eye with maximum levator function of 3 mm; maximum levator function in the left eye was 13 mm (Fig. 1A). No lid erythema or edema was present. Extraocular movements were full in

Ocular myocysticercosis: an unusual case of ptosis.
BACKGROUND Cysticercosis is common in endemic countries like India. It can have various clinical manifestations depending on the tissue involved. It refers to a parasitic infestation by Cysticercus cellulosae, the larval form of the pork tapeworm or Taenia solium. OBJECTIVE To report an unusual case of ocular cysticercosis involving the levator palpebrae superioris and superior rectus muscle ...
متن کاملMuscle spindles in the levator palpebrae superioris muscle of human foetuses.
Studies were performed on the levator palpebrae superioris muscle, isolated from foetuses aged 17 to 30 weeks. The number of muscle spindles varied from 2 in the 17th week to 7 in the 30th week. The length of the muscle spindles ranged from 20 to 500 microm, and the diameter varied from 10 to 70 microm. These observations show that the number of muscle spindles in levator palpebrae superioris m...
متن کاملHistological appearances of the levator palpebrae superioris muscle in the Marcus Gunn phenomenon.
The levator palpebrae superioris muscles from 12 cases of Marcus Gunn phenomenon were examined histologically by means of histochemistry and morphometry. The appearances were of a neurogenic atrophy with pathological changes occurring in both the affected side and the clinically normal side, suggesting that the causative lesion was located in the central nervous system.
متن کاملOcular cysticercosis: diagnosis and treatment.
I have read the case report titled “Ocular myocysticercosis: an unusual case of ptosis” published in the Nepalese Journal of Ophthalmology by Agrawal S et al (2013) with a great interest. The author has reported an unusual presentation of ocular cysticercosis in a 24-year-old male presenting as right eyelid ptosis due to involvement of levator palpebrae superioris and superior rectus muscle. Si...
متن کاملRecognising aponeurotic ptosis.
Thirteen patients who had ptosis surgery undertaken for disinsertion of the aponeurosis of the levator palpebrae superioris were reviewed. Pre-operatively all the patients had characteristic clinical signs of levator disinsertion which was confirmed at surgery and corrected by reposition of the disinserted aponeurosis. Five of these patients were initially mistakenly diagnosed as having a neuro...
